Preschoolers explore Community, Diversity, and the Concept of Care November 2017

by | Dec 4, 2017 | Oak Room, Whats Happening at Wild Roots

Hello families! November has somehow come and gone. We’ve had a very busy month. We began November introducing a Montessori lesson of food prep. Specifically, banana slicing. Through this work, children experience focus and concentration building, fine motor skills, and a sense of community building within the classroom. After the child slices the banana, they will walk around and offer to their friends, “would you like a banana?” To which a child will respond with grace and courtesy skills of, “yes, please” or “no, thank you.” Within the next few weeks, we will be incorporating other food prep activities, which will help to further their interest and ability in this area. Additionally, Oak room has had many birthday celebrations this month and honoring each individual birthday child for his own uniqueness gave an opportunity for us to introduce the diversity of our planet Earth. This included work where the children experienced new animals and their native environments around the world. To further expand their learning about our planet, we talked about the concept of care for our environment. Developing and understanding of community, diversity, and the concept of care is vastly important and can be understood in many different areas. We were excited to see the topic unfold in the classroom, and we will guide the children in developing their ideas and creating meaningful work surrounding these topics, so that over the next few months, the children discover and apply what care and understanding differences really mean to them Lastly, we have observed such growth in each individual child this month. They have continued progressing in all areas of the classroom. Name recognition, identifying the different sounds and letter names (the alphabet) , and practical life are a few examples of where we’ve seen children master their skills. We will continue to work rigorously as the weeks progress. Thank you for all you do!
